Is your business visible in AI search?
Check whether your local business gives ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini enough clear, consistent evidence to understand what you do and where you work.
The new visibility gap
Why your business might be invisible in AI search, and what to do about it
Customers no longer discover local businesses through one results page. They still use Google Search and Maps, but they also ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google’s AI features to compare options, explain services, and suggest what to do next. If those systems cannot confidently connect your business name to your services, location, people, and proof, you may be absent from the answer even when your company is a legitimate local choice.
The solution is not a secret AI file or a paragraph stuffed with city names. Google says its established search fundamentals still apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no special markup required. The practical work is to make your important information crawlable, internally connected, accurate, and available as visible text. Structured data can reinforce that meaning, but it should describe what a visitor can already see, not make claims the page cannot support.
For a local service business, clarity begins with complete service pages and a current Google Business Profile. Each core service should have a useful explanation, direct answers to common questions, a truthful service area, and a clear next step. The site should identify the real business and the people responsible for its advice. First-hand photos, project examples, policies, credentials, and customer feedback help a person judge the company while giving search systems corroborating context.
Consistency matters outside the website too. A different phone number in an old directory, a duplicate listing, or an outdated business category creates ambiguity. Search and answer engines do not all assemble responses the same way, but each benefits from information that can be found and checked across trustworthy sources. Your website, profile, major citations, social identities, and public expert pages should describe the same real-world entity.
Prioritize the facts that affect a customer’s immediate decision. A wrong service area, disconnected phone number, expired license claim, or unclear emergency availability deserves attention before a new article. Then improve the pages that explain your highest-value work. Give each page a descriptive title, a direct opening answer, original evidence, the person responsible for the information, and links to the next useful page. This creates a stronger customer journey while making the site easier to interpret.
Measure visibility with a repeatable test rather than a one-time screenshot. Use the same detailed prompts, location, device, and logged-in or logged-out state when practical. Record whether the business appears, which facts are correct, and which sources are linked. Results can change by query wording and over time, so treat a mention as an observation, not proof of permanent placement. Pair these checks with ordinary Search Console, profile, call, and form data.
This checklist turns those principles into 20 yes-or-no checks across content, schema, human trust, Google Business Profile, and local citations. Check only what is live today. Every unchecked item shows one specific fix; completed items collapse so the remaining work becomes the plan. The score is a diagnostic, not a promise that an engine will cite you. Use the test queries below to observe what the systems currently return, fix the weakest evidence, and repeat the same queries after search systems have had time to discover the changes.

Add one natural sentence near the top of each core page naming the business type, service, primary city, and surrounding service area.
Add one real project example with an original photo, the problem, the work completed, and a truthful result.
Link each service page to its relevant guide, location information, owner profile, and contact path using descriptive words.
5 points
Schema markup
Add one Organization or accurate local-business entity with a stable @id, name, URL, logo, and service area.
Compare every structured name, address, phone, hour, price, and service claim with what a visitor can read on the page.
Connect each important service page to the provider entity and describe only the services or offers that are visibly presented.
Create an owner or author page, give the Person and Organization stable IDs, and reuse those IDs on articles and service pages.
Run the page through Schema.org Validator and Google Rich Results Test; remove errors and any fact that is not visible or supportable.

Test the real results
Try three customer questions yourself
Enter your business type. Use the same prompts in a fresh ChatGPT conversation, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google Search. Record the businesses named, facts shown, and sources linked. A single result is not a permanent ranking.
How the engines differ
One evidence base, different answer systems
ChatGPT Search can search the web, sometimes using search partners, and may show inline citations and a Sources panel. Perplexity describes its product as real-time web search that synthesizes answers with links to original sources. Google AI Overviews use Google Search systems and supporting links; Google says normal SEO requirements apply and a page must be indexed and eligible for a search snippet, with no special AI schema required. Gemini Apps may show sources and related links from public websites or connected content, but not every response includes them.
No platform promises to mention or cite a particular business. Build accurate, crawlable, people-first evidence, then test what each surface actually returns. Read the primary documentation from OpenAI, Perplexity, Google Search Central, and Gemini Help.

Common questions
AI search visibility for local businesses
How can I tell if my business is showing on ChatGPT?
Ask several specific local questions a customer would use, then inspect the named businesses, cited sources, and factual details. Repeat the test in a fresh conversation and compare it with Perplexity, Gemini, and Google Search because results can vary.
Does schema markup guarantee an AI citation?
No. Structured data can clarify entities and facts, but it does not guarantee crawling, indexing, ranking, or citation. It must also match the visible page content.
Is AEO separate from local SEO?
They overlap. Accurate business data, useful service pages, clear answers, internal links, reviews, and trusted mentions support traditional local search and AI answer visibility. AEO emphasizes making those facts easy to extract and verify.
How often should I repeat this AI visibility check?
Repeat it quarterly and after a move, rebrand, new website, new service, ownership change, or significant profile update.
