The missing fifth of the audit

Why most local SEO audits miss the AEO layer

A traditional local SEO audit usually checks your Google Business Profile, website, directory listings, and reviews. Those still matter. But customers now ask questions in more places: Google’s answer features, ChatGPT, Gemini, voice assistants, maps, and industry-specific apps. If those systems cannot confidently understand who you are, what you do, and where you work, an otherwise healthy local presence can still disappear from the answer.

The answer is not a pile of new “AI tricks.” It is clearer evidence. Your business name, services, location, people, hours, reviews, and customer-facing answers should agree across your profile, website, and trusted third-party sources. Your site should explain real services in the language customers use. It should also show who is responsible for the advice, provide direct answers, and connect claims to first-hand proof.

This audit treats AI and answer-engine visibility as one of five equal categories. That keeps the new layer in proportion: important enough to measure, but not an excuse to neglect a broken profile or a website that cannot turn a visit into a call. Each question is weighted by practical impact. A complete, accurate profile matters more than a cosmetic tweak; a working review process matters more than chasing a perfect rating.

Your total score is a starting point, not a ranking guarantee. Pay closer attention to the category bars and personalized priorities. A business scoring 78 overall may still have a serious citation problem after a move. Another may have excellent reviews but no service pages for Google or an AI system to cite. Use the result to fix the weakest evidence first, then repeat the audit after meaningful changes.

Answer based on what exists today, not what is sitting in a project list. If you are unsure, choose “partly / not sure.” Uncertainty is useful audit information because a customer or search system may have the same problem. When the result names a priority, verify it with the account, page, listing, or customer journey before changing anything. Save screenshots and baseline numbers where possible. That gives you a clean before-and-after comparison instead of relying on memory.

Finally, avoid trying to repair all five categories in one weekend. Correct dangerous facts first: wrong phone numbers, hours, locations, access, broken contact actions, and missing indexing. Then improve the information that helps a customer choose. Consistent execution beats a dramatic audit followed by six months of silence.

    About your local SEO score

What is a good local SEO audit score?

Above 75 means the foundation is generally healthy. Still inspect every category: a high total can hide a specific weakness that costs calls.

How often should I run this audit?

Quarterly is a useful rhythm. Run it again after a move, rebrand, website launch, major service change, or a change in ownership or hours.

Does this checklist include AI search?

Yes. Twenty points cover whether AI and answer engines can accurately understand your services, location, people, proof, and direct answers.
